The modern world needs modern shamans

Modern shamans heal by reintroducing beauty, magic, and enchantment into our lives. Modern shamans are artists, healers, entrepreneurs, visionaries, educators, and creators who serve the global community to ease the suffering of people.

Shamanism is the oldest human healing system. It originated over 10,000 years ago, and there is evidence to suggest that shamanic traditions have been around for 20,000 to 30,000 years. According to the scholar, Roger Walsh, shamanism can be defined “as a family of traditions whose practitioners focus on voluntarily entering altered states of consciousness in which they experience themselves or their spirit(s) interacting with other entities, often by traveling to other realms, in order to serve their community” (The World of Shamanism: New Views of an Ancient Tradition).

The idea behind Modern Shamanism is to explore a different way of engaging with the ancient practice of shamanism, bringing it into the 21st century. The systematic and scientific study of these ancient healing practices is valuable. However, I also offer a new way of looking at shamanic healing. The goal of Modern Shamanism is to honor our ancient past but also recognize the myriad ways in which human beings heal and thrive in the contemporary world.  

Shamans are people who know how to harness the creative universal energy for healing and can arrive in different forms, such as artists, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs as well as those who mainly work with direct healing methods. As we face serious existential challenges of living in the modern age, I wish to engage with others who are interested in healing from a decolonized and holistic perspective. I believe we can only heal ourselves and the world by working together.
